Department Summary

  • The department works collaboratively with district and school leadership teams to lead, coordinate, and strengthen Dual Language and Bilingual programming. This includes supporting program design, instructional alignment, resource selection, staff collaboration, and continuous improvement to ensure that multilingual learners are served through effective and responsive programming.

  • The department supports the development, implementation, and evaluation of English Learner services across the district. This includes helping ensure that students receive appropriate language development support, access to grade level content, and instructional services that are aligned with their academic and linguistic needs.

  • The department assists with appropriate student placement in Dual Language, Bilingual, and English Learner services. This includes reviewing student information, supporting identification procedures, collaborating with school teams, and helping ensure that placement decisions are accurate, equitable, and aligned with district, state, and federal requirements.

  • The department partners with student services staff to support multilingual learners who may need additional academic, social emotional, behavioral, or specialized services. Through coordinated planning and communication, the department helps ensure that multilingual learners receive comprehensive support that reflects the whole child.

  • The department supports curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices that promote language development, biliteracy, academic achievement, and meaningful access to learning. This includes helping educators use student data, language proficiency information, instructional strategies, and culturally responsive practices to meet the needs of multilingual learners.

  • The department supports the District’s strategic plan through the ongoing development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of Dual Language, Bilingual, and English Learner programs and services. This work helps ensure that multilingual learning remains connected to district goals, student outcomes, family engagement, and continuous improvement.

  • The department helps ensure that multilingual programs and services align with district expectations, Illinois requirements, and federal guidelines. This includes supporting documentation, reporting, program procedures, parent notification, language services, and compliance related responsibilities for English Learner and bilingual education programs.

  • The department works to strengthen communication and partnership with families of multilingual learners. This includes supporting accessible communication, honoring families’ languages and cultures, promoting family participation, and helping families understand program options, services, student progress, and available supports.

  • The department promotes learning environments that value students’ home languages, cultural identities, and lived experiences. By supporting multilingualism and multicultural understanding, the department helps create inclusive schools where students and families feel respected, represented, and connected.

  • The department supports professional learning for teachers, specialists, administrators, and staff who serve multilingual learners. This includes guidance on language development, Dual Language instruction, bilingual education, culturally responsive practices, assessment interpretation, family engagement, and strategies that support multilingual students across content areas.

  • The Multilingual Learning Department advocates for educational equity and excellence for multilingual learners. Through collaboration, data informed planning, high quality programming, and a commitment to language and cultural assets, the department helps students build the skills, confidence, and opportunities needed for success in school and beyond.
