Integrated Pest Management Plan

Structural Pest Control Act & Illinois Pesticide Act Notice

The Structural Pest Control Act and the Illinois Pesticide Act govern how pests such as mice, ants, and other insects are managed in Illinois schools.

These laws affect schools in two primary ways:

  1. All Illinois schools are required to implement a pest management program known as Integrated Pest Management (IPM).
  2. Schools must provide advance notice to staff, students, and parents before certain types of pest control applications are made.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) focuses on prevention through routine inspection, sanitation, maintenance, and communication with school administration. The goal is to identify and eliminate conditions that may attract or support pests. Pest control products are used only when necessary to address a specific problem. Routine or scheduled spraying inside school buildings is not part of the program.

If it becomes necessary to use pest control products other than traps or baits, written notice will be provided at least two business days prior to the application. The only exception is in cases where there is an immediate threat to health or property. In those situations, notice will be posted as soon as practical.
